Women on the Water

Stay Sailing!

Women on the Water Sailing, is an official TACS program. Learn to sail with other women during a two-hour sail on West Bay. You'll learn at your own pace with one of our instructors, Captain Jenny or Captain Stearman.

Be sure to dress properly for being on the water (It can get cold out there) --sunglasses, sunscreen, soft-soled, close-toed shoes, layers. (We'll supply PFDs or you can bring your own)

We have the boats available during the summer.  Please check the schedule on our Registration page for more details.  You'll find parking across the street from Centerpointe Marina, take the tunnel under the road, and meet outside the Great Lakes Sailing Co. office under the big white tent. We will be taking a Marlow Hunter 22 boat for a sail! Your Captain will meet you and show you the boat and get underway shortly with you. Depending on the wind and weather, we hope to put the sails out and explore the south end of West Bay. This is a learning experience, so come ready to steer the boat, help raise the sails, and take an active part in navigating the bay. No prior experience necessary, but you will be asked to help! Your Captain will get you back to the dock and make the boat ship shape for the next sail. Come with curiosity and ready to ask questions!

Captain Jenny

With over 20 years of sailing experience, Captain Jenny has dedicated her career to teaching and sharing the joy of sailing. For the past four years, she has been a captain with Great Lakes Sailing Co., where she teaches American Sailing Association (ASA) courses, leads charters, and guides day sails.

Before that, Jenny spent eight summers at Traverse Area Community Sailing, where she taught children how to sail—helping to instill confidence and a love for the water in young sailors.

Passionate about making sailing accessible to all, Jenny thrives on getting new sailors out on the water, guiding them as they develop skills, gain confidence, and discover the excitement of sailing.

Captain Stephanie

Stephanie fell in love with sailing at just 13 years old—and she’s never looked back. Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, she grew up sailing dinghies in English Bay before moving on to competitive college racing.

With coaching and sailing experience across Canada, the U.S., and the U.K., Stephanie holds instructor certifications from Sail Canada and US Sailing and has completed an offshore sailing program through the Royal Yachting Association.

Currently, she shares her passion for the sport as a Middle School teacher and coach for the TACS Middle/High School Racing Team. When she’s not teaching, she enjoys cruising and has explored many of British Columbia’s stunning coastal islands aboard the Crown 28 sailboat she once owned with her husband.

Stephanie is also a strong advocate for women in sailing. She has raced as bowman on two competitive women’s keelboat teams—Llanoria, an International 6mr, and Knockout, a J-92.

Whether coaching young racers, cruising new waters, or competing on the bow, Stephanie is dedicated to sharing her love of sailing with all generations.
